Epson Disc Producer Product Review

At CD-writer.com we have got hands on experience of every CD and DVD production systems made available to the UK market in the last 10 years, whether it be Rimage, Microboards, Primera, StorDigital, XLNT, MFDigital (the list goes on). It can be said that many manufacturers will talk to us prior to releasing their products onto the market. That's exactly what Epson UK did when they needed to sound out the market place for their new product the Epson Disc Producer.

From first impressions, look and feel it is clear that Epson's new Disc publishing system has been very well conceived. They will go to lengths to tell you that this sort of product is smack in the middle of Epson territory, since they own printer technology and robotics technology, and the tell is a pure blend of the two.

There is something else about the Epson product too, and that the finish. It uses high quality plastic that is beveled, rounded and glossed. It has lines that you would appreciate in a top of the range BMW. Its tonal greys plastics compliment the transparent viewing windows, housed in the solid lid that clicks solidly into place. This highly finished product is just starting its journey.

For sure Epson are late to release this product. It's a mature and saturated market with many players, most notable Primera and MicroBoards. Clearly the unit has been years in development and must have cost $1000'000's in development. So how do Epson plan to see a return on their investment? Well the PP-100 has reliability, quality, durability, economy on its side. Additionally we can expect the established distribution network, the wide marketing reach to assist, but most notably we think the free 1 year on site warranty goes a long way to prove Epson's confidence in their product.

Technically the Epson PP-100 is ahead of the pack. With its 6 colour ink cart system the print quality is astounding and more economical than its competitors. It is only closely matched by the MicroBoards MX-2 and PrintFactory Pro series.

So what does the PP-100 offer? You get an out of the box solution for the automated production of up to 100 CDs or DVDs, you get 2 built in DVD CD burners and you get an integrated market leading inkjet printer. Unattended operation means making up to 100 discs richly printed on matt or glossy discs is a breeze, and the six colour printing technology provides a jaw dropping finish. Whatsmore the design and build quality is such that larger production runs of up to 1000 can be accomplished without worry of sticking or dropping discs.

Getting up and running is easy with the PP-100 with its out of the box plug and play operation, the bundled Total Disc Maker software makes instant operation easy. The unit ships with a compliment of ink cartridges with a proposed output of 1000 discs that cost around £0.17 per unit to print.

The Total Disc Maker software that ships with the unit is very easy to use. Just like the familiar Nero software you can Data DVD, Data CD, Music CD, Music & Data CD, Video CD, or a Copy of a DVD or CD. The software also includes a label designing application containing templates. You can also import your own artwork in BMP and JPEG formats. It is very important when using imported artwork that it is of the correct size and DPI, with 300DPI resolution being best. This will ensure perfect printing. You can also quickly and easily make simple text labels. Other more complex functions are also available that allow the user to dynamically create disc labels.

Once you have selected your data and created your artwork, simply click the publish button to start the production process. Whilst in operation the PP-100 will keep you informed about the job status via the Epson Total Disc Monitoring software. This keeps you informed about how many discs you have done, how many are left to record, if you need to refill the machine and how much ink you have left. All very useful information when trying to ensure the production of prefect quality discs.

Further Points to note:
Keeping track of previous jobs for re-orders is made easy since the device and software keeps a record of all previous jobs, and the elements used to create them.

The 6 separate inks systems can be a life saver, since not only do you achieve the highest possible print quality, but you will also save money, since; if you want to print 100 discs that are blue, you will only need to change the Blue cartridge when it runs out. This is good for the environment too, since it saves ink wastage.

The Epson Disc Producer also uses an AcuGrip mechanism on its robotic lifter ensuring it only lifts one disc and avoids double loading and jamming caused by sticky disc phenomenon.

Typically the PP-100 can print 1 disc per minute, but overall output is determined buy the amount of data being burnt to the discs.

Since the device is completely sealed in its robust housing the Epson PP-100 ensures that the discs remain free of dust and fingerprints. This housing make the PP-100 ideal for medical purposes or in facilities whereby there may be potential for contamination or disruption.

Blu-ray sales accelerate to record levels in Japan

Latest GfK Retail and Technology Japan figures have revealed that in the first week of November 2008, Blu-ray Disc Recorders have surpassed a 50% market share for DVD Recorders in unit terms.

Looking back to October 2007, Blu-ray Disc Recorders accounted for a market share of 10% and have since exhibited rapid growth.

The average sales price has begun to come down in 2008. In the first week of June 2008, the average sales price of Blu-ray Disc Recorders was between 110,000 – 120,000 JPY. By the third week of October, it dropped to between 100,000 – 110,000 JPY.

GfK Retail and Technology estimates that the price will continue to be reduced in the build-up to Christmas and the product may become ‘one-to-watch’ during the winter sales.

Blu-ray transition outpacing DVD recorders
In addition to this impressive growth, according to GfK’s retail audit survey, Blu-ray Disc Recorders are replacing DVD Recorders 1.5 times faster than DVD Recorders replaced VHS Recorders.

DVD recorders exceeded 10% market share in the fifth week of April 2002 and continued to grow steadily, eventually surpassing 50% after 82 weeks in the fourth week of November 2003. In comparison, Blu-ray Disc Recorders exceeded 10% market share in the fifth week of October 2007 and after 53 weeks, in the first week of November 2008, surpassed 50%.

One of the principal reasons for this quicker rate of change is the rise in sales of Flat Panel TVs, enabling viewers to experience digital high definition broadcasting. Blu-ray Recorders can record digital high definition broadcasting without any drop in quality, which has assisted the accelerated demand for this product.

Panasonic introduces world's first 6X write-once blu-ray disc media

Osaka, Japan (June 18, 2008) -- Panasonic, the leading brand by which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is known, announced today that it has developed the world's first Write-Once Blu-ray Discs(BD-R) with 6X writing speed*. The new discs will be available in Japan with both 25GB and 50GB capacities in July.

Panasonic, which introduced the world's first dual-layer 1X BD-RE Blu-ray Disc in 2004**, 2X BD-R/RE Discs in 2006, and 4X BD-R Disc in 2007, is now launching the world's first 6X BD-R to meet consumer demand to write and read large amounts of data at a higher speed. The new 6X discs have a maximum data transfer speed of 216Mbps, which is 20% faster than that of 16X DVD-R discs. This transfer speed, along with the discs' high capacity, allows consumers to use these discs for a variety of applications such as storing High Definition video or backing up PC data.

The new discs have a wide power margin at any writing speeds from 1X to 6X. This enables high-quality recording, even if the drive's laser power fluctuates, resulting in greater overall drive compatibility.

Panasonic's adoption of newly-developed disc technology produces extremely level and well-balanced discs with highly precise signal grooves. This improves servo characteristics and enables the laser beam to focus to the right position even when the disc is rotating with 6X high speed, thus providing optimum reading and writing performance.

Blu-ray disc drives compatible with 6X write-once Blu-ray discs are planned to be commercialized in Japan by the end of September 2008.

**The capacity of Blu-ray discs is expressed in units of 1GB=1 billion bytes, but the capacity is slightly below that after formatting, so that the actual amount area that can be used will be less.

Xbox boss questions why consumers would upscale from DVD

Xbox president Robbie Bach has criticised Blu-Ray’s lack of sales success since the HD-DVD format imploded – and questioned why consumers would bother upscaling from DVD.

Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Bach also ruled out any possibility of a Blu-Ray enabled Xbox – either in this or the next generation.

Bach said: “If you look at the Blu-ray player market, you haven't seen the acceleration everybody expected (since the demise of HD DVD). It's not as much about whether all the content is in a Blu-ray format or a HD-DVD format. “You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition play

“No. There is nothing to even talk about right now with regard to the next generation. That is so far out that there isn't anything to talk about.”

Singulus reveals uptake of replication hardware is ahead of ‘last-gen’ disc format

Optical disc hardware specialist Singulus has received orders for 21 Blu-Ray dual-layer duplication machines in the first quarter of this year – a faster adoption than of the format’s predeccesor DVD 11 years ago.

"This means that the orders for Blu-ray in the first year of the dual layer technology already by far exceeded the volume at the start of the DVD 11 years ago with 17 machines," said chief financial officer Stefan Baustert.
