• DVD format war brews even as videos go off-disk

  Hollywood is gearing up for an ugly war over rival DVD formats, but the real battle may be in keeping customers hooked on physical discs at all.
  
  "The irony of this format war is that it comes at the tail end of the century-long era of physical media," said Ted Schadler, analyst with Forrester Research.
  
  "While a high-definition video format does bring benefits over today's standard-definition discs, in movies as in music consumers are moving beyond shiny discs," said Schadler.

• NEC unveils chip to bridge Blu-ray/HD DVD divide

  A truce between the Blu-ray and HD DVD worlds is still probably a way off, but NEC has come up with a chip that could help companies bridge the gap.
  
  The chip, essentially a controller, works in both Blu-ray and HD DVD players. One chip that works with both standards could cut the cost of building a player that accomodates Blu-ray and HD DVD discs.
  
  The chip will start shipping in April 2007, NEC said.

• Sony to Ship First 50GB Blu-ray Movies This Week

  Several movie studios have announced plans of releasing movies on 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc technology
  
  Sony has announced that Click, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Black Hawk Down will be the first Sony films released on 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc. Although Blu-ray discs have been available on the market for several months now, these are 50GB dual-layer discs as opposed to the current discs being only 25GB. Pricing for the Sony films has not been publicly released.

• Blu-Ray Set To Take The World By Storm!

  The Blu-ray Disc belongs to a new generation of optical discs capable of staging high density data. Blu-Ray technology is based on a blue-violet coloured laser.
  
  The blue laser operates at a wave length of 405 nm, while older technology such as DVDs and CDs are based on red and infrared lasers that works at 650 and 780 nm. Since the wave length is shorter with a blue laser, the new Blu-ray technology makes is possible to store much more information.

• Blu-ray Disc Format Specifications Completed!

  The Blu-ray Disc Association announced today that the format specification is complete and that licensing is ready to begin for BD-ROM, BD-RE and BD-R.
  
  The completion of the specification now enables content providers and manufacturers to begin the process of producing Blu-ray Disc products for a wide variety of uses.
  
  The Blu-ray Disc Association approved these specifications on January 2, 2006. Licensing of the BD-R and BD-RE 2.0 specifications began December 26, 2005. Specifications have been approved for the Blu-ray Disc single (25GB) and dual (50GB) layer specifications.

• JVC Becomes a Member of Blu-ray Disc Association

  JVC has joined the Blu-ray Disc Association, further strengthening the already overwhelming support for the Blu-ray Disc high-definition optical-disc format among the world's leading consumer electronics and PC companies.
  
  JVC becomes one of the first companies to join the newly formed Blu-ray Disc Association. The BDA was created to broaden the opportunities for other companies to help develop, promote and establish Blu-ray Disc as an industry standard for high-definition optical storage.
  
  "JVC's decision to join in the development and promotion of the Blu-ray Disc format adds to the tremendous support we enjoy within the consumer electronics industry," said Maureen Weber, chief BDA spokesperson and General Manager of HP's Optical Storage Solutions Business, on behalf of the Blu-ray Disc Association. "We expect many, many more companies representing all segments of the consumer-electronics, PC and optical media industries to soon join them as members of the BDA."
  
  "We joined the Blu-ray Disc Association because Blu-ray Disc is the better technology for content owners and consumers," said Masahiko Tsuruta, Associate Director, Corporate R&D of JVC. "And if you look at the number of companies supporting Blu-ray Disc, and who they are, it's also clear the consumer electronics industry is firmly behind the Blu-ray Disc format."

• Mac OS X 10.5 to support HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc?

  Apple may be preparing to support not only Blu-ray Disc but also HD DVD, it has emerged. The next major relase of the Mac OS X operating system, 'Leopard' may allow users to play and burn both types of high-definition media - making it a sort of Hi-Def Leppard, we suppose... oh well... - it has be claimed.
  
  According to Think Secret sources, Final Cut Studio, Apple's pro-oriented digital movie editing tool may also be updated with BD and HD DVD support. The moles point to a possible hardware release sometime during the first half of 2007.

• Audio/Video: Sony unveils prototype hybrid Blu-ray, headphones, Bluetooth devices

  Sony held the "Dealer Convention 2006" on the 13th, and Impress Watch was of course on hand to see what they had available. The company demonstrated several of their Blu-ray products, including a hybrid recorder with both hard drive and Blu-ray drive, as well as new Sugo Roku recorders, new LocationFree products, and new cameras and projectors.
  
  
  
  Also shown by the company were several new audio products including several new models of headphones. Perhaps more interesting was the "HWS-NEW" Bluetooth unit that can act as both a transmitter and a receiver. They also showed a few models of headphones that could be used wirelessly, an a transmitter called the "TMR-NEW." Finally, they showed the "SRS-NEW" 2ch Bluetooth speakers.
