• Sony to boost marketing spending to push HDTV

  “U.S. unit plans to push marketing spending to record levels this year to fuel sales of high-definition electronics such as televisions, camcorders and DVD players, a senior executive told Reuters.

  Cheaper TVs, more broadcast channels, and the launch of next-generation Blu-ray DVD players that will allow consumers to make their own high-definition viewing choices are all expected to spur demand for HD components.

  "This will be the year of mass messaging," Michael Fasulo, chief marketing officer at Sony Electronics, told Reuters in an interview this week. "HD is building by double-digits (in percentage) every year. We haven't seen this kind of opportunity in a long time."” source: 'DittoIt' 2006-03-25

• More HD DVD Issues: Warner May Miss Launch Date

  “It continually seems like the next-gen DVD format battle isn't going to be resolved or settled anytime soon. HD DVD got a boost after LG joined the HD DVD camp as well as supporting Blu-ray (and told dealers about plans to offer a dual-format player), but now the format has been hit with some setbacks.

  First, it was Microsoft announcing that, although they officially support HD DVD, the company's Vista OS may not support the format at launch. Now, Reuters is reporting that Warner Home Video, which set March 28 as the date for its first HD DVD titles to be available in stores, says that technical problems may delay the arrival of the discs.

  Warner Home Video division president Ron Sanders told Reuters, "To be honest, the outlook is tenuous -- we're still coming out with an initial slate, but we may be a week or two later; we just don't know."

  HD DVD players are supposed to be avaliable this month, but does it make sense to shell out at least $500 for a player that may not have any content? None of the other studios have set a date for their HD DVD releases, and Warner's problems aren't helping an already tenuous situation.”source: 'DittoIt' 2006-03-16

• Sony to launch Blu-ray Vaio PCs in mid-year

  “Sony is planning to launch desktop and laptop PCs with Blu-ray Disc drives in the middle of this year, an executive said at the Cebit trade show in Hanover, Germany, on Thursday.

  The first computers to feature Blu-ray Disc drives will be high-end models aimed at multimedia use but over time the technology will trickle down to other models, said Tasuku Yazaki, general manager of Sony's Vaio product planning department. The machines will be launched worldwide at around the same time, he said without revealing anymore details of the products.
  

  Players and computer drives for the Blu-ray Disc format, an optical disc format that boasts a storage capacity of 25GB on a single layer disc the size of a CD, are due out in the coming months.

  The first consumer Blu-ray Disc players are due on May 23 when Samsung Electronics�launches a player. On the same day Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Lionsgate Films will launch several�movies on Blu-ray Disc.
  

  But the future of the market is far from certain. A competing format called HD-DVD is also about to be launched and offers much of the same benefits so users will be faced with choosing one of two competing formats or putting off a purchase until a dominant format has emerged.

  Executives from the Blu-ray Disc Association talked up their format at Cebit on Thursday and supporting companies announced hardware launch plans. Pioneer previewed an upcoming Blu-ray Disc drive for computers and both Matsushita Electric Industrial�(Panasonic) and Koninklijke Philips Electronics said they would launch consumer players in the second half of this year.

  Philips said its computer drive, the SPD700, will be available in the U.S. in the second half and will be able to write to recordable BD-R and rewritable BD-RW media in addition to DVD and CD formats. No price was given for the drive.” source: 'Infoworld' 2006-03-09
