  • HD-DVD won't output full quality to current HDTV devices

“The movie industry and others will go to great lengths to combat piracy, even if that means hurting early adopters of HDTV technology by crippling functionality. AACS, the DRM-esque technology for HD-DVD players, will not produce a full quality signal from component video connectors, as analog is "unsafe". The resulting resolution is 960x540 - more than a standard TV, but vastly inferior to the actual 1920x1080 resolution that HD will support natively. That's not the end of it either.” source: 'DittoIt' 2006-02-25

  • HD DVD and Blu-ray delayed again, as AACS is pushed back

“According to a report at Heise online, the members of the AACS licensing authority could not agree on a final specification last week. The hold up must infuriate HD DVD backers, because the last sticking point apparently only applies to the Blu-ray specific BD+ anti-piracy measure.

  • Philips Electronics Showcases new Blu-ray Disc

“Philips Blu-ray Disc - HD content
Blu-ray Disc technology is based on blue lasers, rather than the red laser used with CDs and DVDs. This allows for a much sharper laser focus, smaller pits on the disc and a huge increase in storage capacity. Blu-ray Disc has the support and technological innovation behind it to be the industry leader and is supported by more than 160 of the world's largest gaming manufacturers, movie studios, consumer electronics and PC manufacturers. The new technology provides consumers with the highest quality level of HD content, not matched by any other HD video source.

  • HD DVD and Blu-ray delayed again, as AACS is pushed back

“When Blu-ray announced their additional protection measures in August of last year, it was largely thought that the extra lockdown was there to woo content owners, especially FOX. BD+ is a dynamic encryption scheme that allows for changing encryption schemes midstream. Should the encryption be cracked, the Blu-ray Disc group can update the encryption scheme and put it on all new discs, thus preventing a single crack from opening up the entire BD spec for the duration of its lifetime. The lack of a dynamic encryption model is what made DeCSS so disastrous in the industry's eyes: once CSS was cracked, all DVDs from then on were crackable. AACS attempts to deal with this problem, but Blu-ray's members believed that additional protection was necessary.” source: 'Arstechnica.com' 2006-02-15

  • Disc vendor snubs HD-DVD for Blu-ray

TDK, one of the leading vendors of DVD discs, is not going to sell media for next-generation high definition HD-DVD drives and will concentrate instead on rival Blu-ray.

The company, a member of the Blu-ray Association, has long been a backer of the technology, but other media vendors, such as Imation, are happy to sell both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs.

Corporate strategy director Jean-Paul Eekhout agreed that sticking to Blu-ray would limit TDK's market initially; but he believed it would win the battle with HD-DVD because it offers more capacity (25GB per disc compared with 15GB) and would, he claimed, bring burners to the market sooner.

He said Blu-ray would also get a big boost with the release of Sony's Playstation 3 games console this year.

TDK will offer both read-only and rewritable discs, known respectively as BD and BD-RE media (the RW suffix of previous disc generations has been dropped, apparently for the benefit of non-English speakers, to whom it naturally makes more sense than giving 'writable' a ghost 'w').source: 'DittoIt' 2006-02-05
