• MGM to support Blu-ray Disc Format

  “Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. on Wednesday said it would support the new high definition Blu-ray Disc format, created by a group led by Sony.
  

  
  The MGM announcement marks the latest move in an increasingly heated battle over rival DVD technologies between the Sony-led camp and another group led by Toshiba, which is pushing a format known as HD DVD.

• Fight over dominant DVD format intensifies

  Both camps have garnered followers over the years. Besides Sony and Matsushita, the Blu-ray format has gained support from several other industry heavyweights, including Phillips, Sharp, Pioneer, LG Phillips, 21st Century Fox, Disney, Dell, HP and Apple. The HD-DVD camp, on the other hand, has snagged NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft, Intel, Universal and Warner Music. Currently, only Paramount has expressed support for both.
  

  
  Sony and Toshiba -- leaders of the two opposing camps -- tried this year to negotiate a deal that could lead to mutual benefit, but the billion-dollars' worth of yearly royalties and the continual profit at stake, and most importantly, the huge differences between the two formats, have prevented the two camps from reaching an agreement.
  

  
  The Blu-ray format uses a 1.1 mm disc covered with a protective layer of merely 0.1 mm. By contrast, HD-DVD uses 0.6 mm disc with 0.6 mm protective coating.
  

  
  Taiwan is also striving to be a player in the field. The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Taiwan Advanced Optical Storage Research Alliance (AOSRA) co-developed a new DVD format entitled FVD, which stands for "Forward Versatile Disc." A double-layered FVD disc can have a capacity of 9.8 to 11 GB. The track pitch has been reduced to 0.64 mm.
  

  
  Huang Der-ray, deputy general director of opto-electronics and systems laboratories in ITRI, said a FVD prototype has already been completed and the FVD-format disc will be available by the end of the year.

• Toshibas strategy: Grab China DVD market from Sony at any risk

  In the high-stakes battle with Sony over whose format will power the next generation of DVD players, Toshiba has adopted a potentially perilous strategy: encouraging low-cost Chinese competitors to crank out machines using its standard, known as HD-DVD.

  Courting Chinese makers has been largely taboo in Japan, where manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic have long tried to delay the transition of their technologies into cheap commodities.
  

  Toshiba?s decision could have major ramifications in the race for the billions of dollars likely to flow from the next generation of DVD technology, which promises enhanced pictures and audio and more disc space.
  

  Toshiba and Sony have been fighting an increasingly bitter war over which technology will become the industry standard. It is a fight that carries particular significance for Sony, which once championed the higher-quality Betamax but still lost the battle over the standard for videocassettes.
  

  In the latest brawl, negotiations to merge their formats failed, so the two sides have been lobbying Hollywood studios, disc manufacturers, computer giants like Dell and software moguls like Microsoft, as well as retailers like Best Buy.
  

  Sony and others developing a technology known as Blu-ray have won major victories by persuading more studios to put movies into their format. Sony also plans to include Blu-ray technology in its PlayStation 3 game consoles when they are released in the spring, effectively turning them into Blu-ray DVD players.
  

  To thwart Sony, Toshiba has reached a bargain with Chinese manufacturers. By making its technology available to them, Toshiba hopes to get cheaper HD-DVD players in the stores months ahead of Sony, Panasonic and other Blu-ray companies
