  • Blu-Ray Disc format victorious, for now.... ?

Toshiba have announce they will withdraw from the HD format race, leaving Blu-Ray Disc as the overriding ruler in the market.

Toshiba announced that they will no longer manufacture, develop or market their HD-DVD player and recorders. Shipment of the hardware will cease by the end of March.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said President and CEO of Toshiba Atsutoshi Nishida.

"While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

The Decision by Toshiba to withdraw their competitive format from the market should help the Blu-Ray Disc high definition format to improve its installed base of users, but we have to wonder what impact the China HD format will have on western sales, and what level of support the China format will recive from publishers. What to of the potential for Internet based delivery services? We suspect that the future Blu-Ray experience will be tightly woven with online delivery systems, offering addons, upgrades, new scenes, social funtions and more.

Lets hope Blu-Ray Disc delivers on its promises and offers a real "value-add" over and above, DVD and any other HD format.
